To change behavior within the selected health care sites so that screening for alcohol use and FASD is actually implemented, simply stepping in and “training” clinicians will not work. Rather, our approach is a systems approach that recognizes the known barriers to screening and early intervention and incorporates motivational factors that promote a comprehensive approach to prevention, identification, and support of individuals with FASD.
Following the initial round of training programs in all the sites, technical assistance through direct communication via email and telephone will be made available to all providers. This website, built exclusively for providers involved with the MCHB FASD Project, includes a chat room where providers can chat live with each other 24 hours a day. This chat room access enables communities to share information, collaborate on strategic planning, and bond as communities participating in one of the most important healthcare initiatives in the United States. The chat room provides a forum for continuing interaction and learning. Once a month all providers will be invited to participate in a live chat with one or two of the trainers to discuss current problems or barriers to progress.
In addition, providers involved in the MCHB FASD Project will be invited to attend a live web seminar (“webinar”) on this site where they will be able to listen to professionals from around the country discuss important topics that offer insight into the improvement of healthcare, community involvement, obstacles to success, and more. There will be six webinars that will occur in 2007, all of which will be posted on the website. Signing up is easy and invitations and reminders will be sent out with plenty of time before the webinars so that time can be readily scheduled for site staff.
This website also includes a message board feature where providers will be able to post questions, concerns, and comments that can be viewed by all of the provider teams. These questions will be answered by the trainers in a timely fashion and will be posted on the message board so that the providers can share the information. Announcements and information from the trainers will also regularly be posted on the message board, which gives providers a good reason to check back often!
